Full course description

This course is our introduction to the concepts of disability, accessibility, assistive technology, and digital accessibility. It is the best place to start for anyone interested in these topics or attending one of our in-person trainings. 

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Define the medical and social models of disability. 
  • Distinguish between permanent, temporary, and situational disabilities. 
  • Identify ways a person can be affected by a disability.  
  • Define accessibility and recognize its connection to disability.  
  • Explain the purpose of assistive technology. 
  • Describe how assistive technology and digital accessibility are related.
  • Demonstrate self advocacy and self determination. 

Pre-ETS participants – typically 14-21 years old individuals with disabilities within the scope of transition-related consultative and technical assistance (TA) services.  

  • A DRS client is defined by DRS as an individual who: 

  • is 14-21 years old;
  • has a documented disability as determined by the DRS;
  • is enrolled in an educational program, such as homeschool, high school, or post-secondary education;
  • has applied for and been determined eligible by the DRS; and
  • has an approved individualized plan for employment (IPE). 
  • A potentially-eligible student with a documented disability is defined by the DRS as an individual who: 

  • is 14-21 years old; and 
  • has an individualized education program (IEP); or
  • has a 504 Plan; or
  • has a documented disability, regardless of whether they have applied or have been determined eligible for the DRS; and
  • is enrolled in an educational program, such as homeschool, highschool, or post-secondary education.
